Andrea laid it for us. It was about 1 hour 15 min. old. Overall did not feel that great. His article indication was slow to down all the way due to wet ground. He started well but was distracted by rabbit poop soon after. Tracked well down the first leg, at the hangman turn he did give a head turn but kept going. We both keep going forward, he pulls and my feet move, Andrea had to tell us to stop. 2nd leg we were not on the track consistently - wind was blowing hard - he did find the food drop. 2nd turn - same problem with both of us continuing to move forward when we need to back up. Andrea had to stop us again. We were too close to Otter’s track and the chicken smell was blowing. That was my fault, I did not realize Dewey’s track was that close when I laid Otter’s track. The 3rd leg - once we passed the chicken smell and the tennis ball, the last 20 yards were good.
Short track through a break in the woods with articles and food. He had no problem going through the pass between the woods and bushes.

I've been saying a lot this season that I've had many live-and-learn moments. I think this is one of them for you and I. We will be more aware of how/where we put blind tracks in for each other, especially if there is food on either of the tracks. I'm sorry you and Dewey took the brunt of that learning curve today.
ReplyDeleteGoing back and watching the video, I think if you had followed him at 2:02 I think he would have found the track. In the moment I wasn't sure that he would have because he was past the turn by 10+ yards but I bet the wind was pushing that scent. You followed him very nicely at 3:00. At the next turn, he showed loss of scent 3:46, but he looked like he was tracking after that and I would have followed him too. While that 3rd leg was challenging, you remembered to back up when nothing was happening! And you remembered to offer water / re-scent, which is something I am terrible about remembering. Last week it was random gloves on his track; this time chicken scent and a random tennis ball! Dewey, I promise I'm going to lay a track for you that doesn't have added challenges...
Thank you Ellen for making the extra long drive to track with us today!
