1/19/25. Short tracks around fences and woods
1/19/25. Laid these short tracks one at a time, ran him within 5 minutes and put him in the car to marinate while I laid the next one. Food drops varied between 10-15 steps apart. He got better with each track. Track #1. Struggled at the turn into tall cover https://youtu.be/imxw4lYuoHA?feature=shared Track #2 short track from tall cover to short towards fence https://youtu.be/bA4Q4ZZpGu4?feature=shared Track #3 Between 2 fences towards woods https://youtu.be/R9EverPLGJ8?feature=shared Track #4 Parallel woods and turn away https://youtu.be/88B4jnpOJYc?feature=shared

So, have you learned the value of a 6’ leash? It looks like maybe you have. So it’s time to use a 10’ one…but your goal is to stay at 6’. You might let it out to 8-10 feet when he shows you the turn…and then you will walk up the line and stay at 6’. Hint: closer is always better. Give line when he’s tracking well, not when he’s lost (and you know where the track is). Next: when he digs in and pulls hard, if he’s right, GO. TAke a couple of big forward steps—reinforce him for being “bossy.” Obviously you’ll only do this (for now) when you know he’s correct. In a test we tend to grow anchors out of our feet, and we want a dog who knows that if he orders you to follow, you will. And we want to train him to only order you when he’s on the track. Nice job! He’s looking great, you’re handling great.
